Close: This microphone position is intended for live use or pop recordings. The recording took place very close to the hammers' points of contact with the strings. The sound is rather direct, harder than the others, and percussive.

Distant: This is the classic position for recording classical piano music in a recording studio.

Player: This position is available for sound samples for the first time, since the samples were not played by a human being but rather by the "machine" CEUS. This is the reason why microphones could be positioned where the pianist's ears would be while playing.
